appearances are everything where anna owens is concerned. this translates most readily to her picturesque cottage that her family resides in. the lawn is always neatly trimmed, wildflowers boarding the narrow walk with small solar lamps. a white-washed wicker set sits on the small porch, a candle lantern in the middle.
inside the home smells of lemons and vanilla - compliments of anna's obsession with dusting and the air freshener. family photos line the walls and childhood sketchings (much to emerson's horror). shelves are lined with books and trinkets from various travels. save for emerson's shoes and schoolbag that liter the front hall, the home resembles a show piece rather than a place where people actually live. everything is decorated to perfection and things are seldom out of place.
the two-story house looks nice enough from the outside, but it almost hurts to look at the inside of the house. it is almost as if the jumble of furniture is set there to make up for its usual emptiness of people. expensive, mismatched furniture is jammed in every corner of the house, crowding up any of what space would be available. there are only a few rooms that are free of the horrible furniture. blake's room is the only one that could be described as empty. the only items inside of it are his bed and a desk with a computer set on it. his possessions are all stored inside his closet, which is filled almost to the top.
though small and nowhere close to the grandeur of the heritage home, there could be no other home in eventide more quaint then the benedikt's home. the exterior has stayed frozen in time, completely unchanged in all its years except for the plethora of wildflowers grown in the front to entice visitors and the small but immaculate garden behind the house, filled with every type of plant that could stand the harsh icelandic climate and the occasional fruit tree.
the interior isn't too different from the exterior. though small, every room in the house seems taken right out of martha stewart's handbook. the walls are painted in the right color to complement every piece of furniture strategically placed to offset the small size of the home. the only anomaly in an otherwise perfect house would be greenly's room. decorated in the usual style of a teenager-disorganized beyond belief- the only semblance it has to the rest of the house are the lavender painted walls and the equally cutesy furniture. everything else screams greenly, from the piles of colorful clothes to the packs of cigarettes shoved under clothes to her guitar resting against her desk and the vanity covered with makeup.
the summett's home is on the smaller side, with three bedrooms, one bathroom, and only a small kitchen with an adjacent family room. the house was painted rather bland colors, save for collette's room which was bright with paintings that she had done. amelia's room was probably the most depressing of all, just consisting of a white colors, with no pictures or decorations to speak of.
the outside isn't much different. there is no garden in the front, only the small little shack that sits next to the house. the shack, which probably had been used as a tool shed before, and now been converted to a storage space of sorts. anything they couldn't fit into the house, went into there.
the johannson home, if describing it to someone outside the area, would be a lot like showing them a picture of a more modern version of the little house on the prairie. the three bedroom house is a very cozy and snug place to live, but yet all the while cluttered due to the family's bad habit of pack-ratting. the outside is more or less wood paneled, painted a soft yellow that makes the entire thing look like a deformed sunflower past a wild crop of wildflowers and weeds. the shutters are painted a milk chocolate brown, with the only brick being a dusted red along the foundation.
inside it's less mother nature and more vintage store. flower wallpaper is starting to peel inside the small kitchen, whereas the wood floor boarding has been worn to comfortable wear by years of being walked over. a giant fireplace sits within a large stone wall, bordered by three wooden walls to make up the family room. the stairs lie just inside the main door and lead up to the second floor where all three bedrooms are held. the parents master bedroom is the first door on your right upon reaching the top, and is just big enough for both of them. the kids lie in order after that on the right, with noel's a few paces down the hall and alex's all the way at the end. her room is wood paneled as well, with the wood light and not in great contrast to the ivory curtains along her windows nor the ivory bedspread covering her bed.

silence wraps the house in a comforting atmosphere as the the scent of old spice renders presences in the stilled air. despite the absence of a female rule on household chores, the cottage remains cleaned under his grandfather's rule. three rooms manage to bring solitude when needed but other than that, a bathroom and kitchen are abandoned social places.
empty walls, all painted white offer a cleaner look but all the same make it blank and plain to the eye; red is the only other color that flourishes on most of the furniture as well as black on the tables and chairs. everything organized is simply left over from his mother's thoughts on how they should be presented in the community; organized and matching with only three colors to comfort a soft gaze. hardwood flooring with red throw on carpets run beneath foot and flattened walls with old bulbs light overhead. it has a small cozy feel to it, small and compact but all the same lifted in a memory; woman used to live in the house and by god, the three boys would keep it looking that way.
at one point, lilja svensson's house was as quaint and provincial as the others on the road but now its light blue paint is chipped and the boards on the porch groan. their house has a small rustic garden on the side that gets the most sun - they plant vegetables in the summer with a sprinkling of flowers to brighten everything. there is no fence to distinguish their land from their neighbors, but that has never been a problem. in the summer, their sunflowers reach high enough to be a natural privacy fence.
inside is much happier looking. rustic wooden furniture is polished to a shine. there are three small bedrooms and lilja sleeps in the biggest one as she hadn't moved out of it since peter's death. wallpaper covers their walls, but it's beginning to peel and is in desperate need of refinishing, much like their floors. still, everything is clean and welcoming and smells warm as lilja likes to make candles in her free time.
iris's room is classic of a teenager. bright colored bedding which is normally made with a scattering of books on it. her walls have posters of popular tv and music stars, but also dried flowers hanging around the top of the room and a collection of shelves with glass figurines. her room is small, so she tries to make the most of it with a lot of storage in the closet and hiding things beneath her bed. her room smells most often of lilies as she uses a reed diffuser on her desk. there are still school books on her desk even though she recently graduated.
